Bacardi: Cuba Libre

Glassware Design

Role: Design Director & Industrial Design, Redscout

To celebrate the rebranding of BACARDÍ's core line, we developed a number of 'Signature Serves' to accompany each of the rums in their collection. For Oro (aka Gold), we celebrated the origins of the brand with a Cuba Libre. As the legend goes, at the end of the Cuban War of Independence, US soldier Captain Russell ordered a BACARDÍ Gold rum and Coke® with lime. Curious onlookers asked its name. The Captain proposed a toast, ‘Por Cuba Libre’, "For A Free Cuba." To gain excitement and to encourage adoption on trade we developed unique 'steal-able' glassware made of brass – a nod to the metal cups that those very soldiers used – and embossed the bat into the kick-up in order to tie the form language to that of the bottles.
